Why Do Women Act Annoyed when I Compliment Them?

I gave up complimenting women long ago; they can’t take it.

Is it me or them? I’ve found that more times than not, a woman seems to get annoyed when I compliment her. The compliment has always been genuine, rather than something I felt I had to do to win brownie points.
